About the role

As our Electrolyte Expert, you will play an instrumental role in our team of scientists and engineers in the development of our groundbreaking water and salt-based flow battery technology. As we move towards commercialization, you will work in our brand new office, workshop, and lab at Alphen a/d Rijn.

As an Electrolyte Expert, you will be optimizing a critical component of our acid-base flow battery system: the electrolyte. You will leverage your expertise in water-based redox electrochemistry to develop next-generation electrolytes that push the boundaries of energy and power density.

What you’ll be doing

  • Lead the research and development of novel electrolytes specifically designed for high-performance acid-base flow batteries.
  • Focus on optimizing electrolyte formulations to improve energy density, power density, and round-trip efficiency of the battery.
  • Investigate the synergistic relationship between electrolyte properties and electrode (material) technology for optimal battery performance.
  • Analyze and identify suitable redox couples for the targeted acidic and basic environments within the battery.
  • Evaluate factors like redox potential, diffusion coefficient, and stability to ensure efficient energy conversion and long battery life.
  • Utilize advanced analytical techniques to characterize key electrolyte properties (e.g., conductivity, viscosity, pH stability, and redox activity).
  • Work closely with electrochemists, material scientists, and engineers to integrate your electrolyte expertise into the overall battery design and optimization.
  • Share your knowledge and findings through presentations, reports, and participation in technical discussions.
  • Actively follow advancements in water-based redox electrochemistry, flow battery technology, and electrode materials relevant to acid-base flow batteries.
  • Seek opportunities to incorporate cutting-edge knowledge into your electrolyte development strategies.
  • Prepare and maintain comprehensive technical reports on electrolyte research, characterization results, and their impact on battery performance.

About our company

AQUABATTERY is a climate-tech start-up, based in the Netherlands. Our vision is to empower the transition to net-zero by providing the world’s most scalable, sustainable and safe long duration energy storage solution. We do so through our revolutionary technology, which enables the storage of electricity in just saltwater. The world will need high volumes of energy storage to enable reliance on renewable energy sources like solar PV and wind energy, even if the sun does not shine or the wind does not blow. Our technology has been successfully demonstrated through several pilot installations in the Netherlands and in Italy. Our international team reinforces our impact-focused culture every day; taking on challenges and celebrating successes together.
