Internship
Are you interested in renewable energy technologies, appealed to know how our battery works, and dedicated to optimize energy efficiencies through science and engineering? Then you are the person we are looking for!
Project 1: Membrane Stack Development
WO - MSc - Internship/Thesis
Who are you and what can you expect?
You are a master student at a Dutch university pursuing a degree in engineering or applied physics. You have hands on experience with building stuff (e.g. drones, electric car, … something awesome?), are able to do a bit of programming (e.g. Matlab), understand fluid dynamics and transport phenomena and have good sense of humor.
You will have the opportunity to learn everything about the Blue Battery and obtain hands on experience building it as well. You can expect supervision and coaching from our side and you will receive a compensation for your work.
What do we expect?
The Blue Battery has 3 main components: water tanks, stack and pumps. You will be working on the stack design. It is called a stack because this component of the Blue Battery is made of a sandwich of ion-exchange membranes. In this project you will investigate the performance of alternative stack designs. We expect you to model and build several stacks. Examine the hydraulic and electric resistance, pressure drop across and over the membranes and other relevant fluid dynamics.
Duration / Location / Deadline
3-6+ months / Leiden / a.s.a.p

Project 2: Experimental optimization battery
HBO - BSc / MSc - Internship / Thesis
Who are you and what can you expect?
You are a bachelor student of a technical study (engineering, engineering, applied physics / chemistry) at a Dutch university of applied sciences, and you love to put your hands out of your pockets and to build, tinker or program things in your spare time. Do you like to install domotics in your home and read it remotely, build a small racing kart of a beer crate, or just keep your computer open and upgrade? Then we'll find you! For this internship you work together with a starting company of young people, who value your (new) ideas and solutions, and you get plenty of opportunities to grow in all kinds of areas. In addition, you get a small compensation for work and pleasure.
What do we expect from you?
In this project you will investigate the impact of different parameters of the battery and try to improve them. The Blue Battery consists of two tanks with water, pumps and a so-called stack with membranes. Fresh and salt water is pumped through this stack with membranes, and electricity is generated by mixing the water. The process is reversed in the storage of electricity, where an electric potential is placed over the membranes, whereby the salt ions separate through the membranes. The aim of this internship is to investigate different types of membranes in a methodical way, while studying various conditions and compositions of the battery. You do this in a very practical way, by building and adjusting the stack for example, but also by adjusting various parameters on a daily basis. The investigation of different loss terms and voltage / current curves is being investigated to find optima.
Duration / Location / Deadline
3-6 months / Leiden / z.s.m.

In addition, you get a small compensation for work and pleasure.
What do we expect from you?
In this project you will help us to develop a management and operating system for the battery. The battery, Blue Battery, consists of two tanks with water, pumps and a so-called stack with membranes. Fresh and salt water is pumped through this stack with membranes, and electricity is generated by mixing the water. The process is reversed in the storage of electricity, where an electric potential is placed over the membranes, whereby the salt ions separate through the membranes. The goal of this internship is to develop a management and operating system for the battery, by programming in Java and C ++. Within this battery management system, the different parts of the battery are controlled, such as sensors, pumps and battery power.

Project 5: Sales & Business Development
HBO - BSc/MSc - Internship/Thesis
Stage: Business Development & Sales
Introductie

Project 6: Blue Battery & Hydrogen car as sustainable & local electricity storage in (micro) grids at The Green Village
WO - MSc - Internship/Thesis
Who are we and do we do?
We are AquaBattery a team of highly motivated engineers interested in water technology. We have developed a battery that can store electricity using only water and table-salt, which we named: the Blue Battery! Renewable energy technologies, such as wind and solar energy, are increasingly deployed. However, these energy sources are intermittent, meaning at the time of electricity supply there may be no demand. So, the excess energy is lost. Furthermore, when the supply level is too high, electrical grids become unstable which could lead to severe damages. Our Blue Battery can help solve these problems.
Are you interested in renewable energy technologies and you would like to develop, and keen to enter the startup world, then you are the person we are looking for.
Who are you and what can you expect?
You are a master student at a Dutch university pursuing a degree relative water, energy, sustainability or environmental technology development. You have hands on experience with following experiments, data analysis, literature review and write technical reports with combination practical work, are able to work in a multidisciplinary team and have excellent transferable skills.
You will be working with a team of high profile professionals. You will have the opportunity to learn everything about the Blue Battery and obtain hands-on experience in technical -applied side of the company. You can expect supervision and coaching from our and you will receive compensation for your work.
What do we expect?
In this project, you will perform in-depth the Blue Battery in real case validation. The main responsibilities will be :
- General maintenance/ improvements on the hydraulics for optimal operation of the Blue Battery.
- Execution of experimentation plan of Blue Battery for the TKI project ( starting up the experiments according to pumps, levels, and flowrate parameters).
- Literature research about integration of the Blue Battery on a microgrid perspective.
- Assess the performance of all ten membrane stacks, determine power profiles, and identify optimal power density during charging and discharging for different regarding different load profiles within a microgrid
- Data analysis of obtained results and use data to optimize charging and discharging process based on power requirements from the microgrid controller.
- Write technical reports about the performance of the Blue Battery.
- Integrate knowledge of data potentially within a model, or any other form, in order to allow optimization of follow-up pilots and projects.
The Blue Battery is a battery that can be applied on a range of different stationary applications, such as households, farms, microgrids and renewable energy plants.
The main goal will be following the experimental planning for the project with all the task mentioned. If you have specific ideas in mind to investigate potentially interesting topics, we are open to discuss the possibilities of that.
